You want some, do ya? It matters not one jot – as Wolfbastard are absolutely gonna give you some with another lively wodge of crusty, punky black metal that means business with a capital Eff.
As this grotty trio from the North of England explode into the opening track ‘It’s Fucking Dark’ on this, their fourth full-length release, two things become very clear. Firstly, and thank Satan himself, they have not changed the formula that Wolfbastard have grown and become; and secondly, this is without doubt the best they have ever sounded.
The production is exceptional as the potent, and unapologetically delivered, barrage of skin smashing by drummer, Dave Buchan, holds up an abominable torrent of horribleness supplied by string-garrotting/voice-shredding duo Si Fox and Dez Carley.
This isn’t supposed to be nice so you can put your pretty blanket and healthy spring picnic in a wheelie bin, crack open a tinny and leather yourself with such timeless classics as ‘Let The Bastards Burn’, ‘Blood on Steel’, and the appropriately titled ‘Drink For Hell’.
By the time you’ve nutted yourself in the face with your own forehead multiple times as you find yourself uncontrollably spasming during the blackened vortex that is ‘Fuck The Bastards’, or the wonderfully titled, and downright pacey, ‘Manic Street Creatures’, you know that each Wolfbastard record is more than just an album release – it’s the next chapter in a crazy, thrilling and incredibly stupid journey that the whole world needs.
Yes, they stick to a formula – but it’s a grade A, do-not-pass-go-and-do-not-collect-two-hundred-pounds formula that should be stuck to at all costs. They’ve come a long way if you go back and listen to Graveyard Sessions, for example, from eight years ago.
They won’t give a shit about any of that though. They’re probably off writing a new song about clams, or South Pennine Assclowns, or poop.
Don’t wind them up – go listen to ‘Satanic Scum Punks’. Now.
Best Paired With: a fight in the chippie, a Deodorant shortage and the contents of gG Allin’s underwear drawer.
