Extreme and Alternative Music reviews with a few haphazard attempts at wine appreciation

Review: Wehmut – IV. Sommer (Naturmacht Productions)

One I will immediately admit that I completely missed…although I am only 5 days late so I won’t be locking myself in the attic with a whip and howling too much. I should do though – because not only have Wehmut released the final (I assume) part of their season-inspired quadrant- but also I am a colossal fan of the preceding three releases.

It seems strange to end on Summer but given the expansive atmospheric nature of this one man Bavarian black metal project, and that soul-crushing search for hope that the music has always enveloped, this is a fitting end. There is bloom and aspiration here. This is a holistic, poignant and exquisitely written kaleidoscope of the best that atmospheric black metal can offer.

Think Arx Artrata, and Gallowbraid. Then listen to it like you would listen to Blut Aus Nord and you’ll starts to feel the gritty realities that lie in this record. Reverberating vocals lie over glistening trem lines and ever-expanding drum progressions, whilst moments of sheer purity occasionally provide time for breath, and for warmth. This is more than just a listening experience…this is a final procession into the infinite beauty of the natural world that Johannes (aka Wehmut) has sewn for us. This is a sun drenched glade where the sadness really dwells.

Fuck everything about mankind. This is my reason to be here. Deeply sewn soundscapes that will outlive us all. Gimme more.

Best Paired With : Everybody Being Dead, The Natural World Being Awesome and a pleasant sense of getting off the ride.
